4 Summary of PPG Networking event Tuesday 20th Sep.
- Compassionate Communities (CoCo) this is an initiative being co-ordinated by the Severn Hospice to encourage volunteers to support members of their community who are ill and at home.
- Quality, Innovation, productivity and Prevention (QUIPP) this was a workshop to gather ideas from people of how they thought that these requirements could be met.
- Medicines Management This workshop was looking for efficient cost effective strategies.
5. Medicines Management Dr McDowell joined us at this point to ask members for their suggestions for reducing waste and so cost. Some of the reasons that people do not use their prescribed medication were taken from the above workshop and some added: lack of info when prescribed, worried about side effects, Cinch explained that start a course – feel better – don’t finish, circumstances change, poor monitoring of repeats by patients & numerous others responsible, alternatives not liked (lack of info) etc.
Some suggestions to educate and encourage awareness of the issues were: leaflets inserted in bags by pharmacy, notices in the surgery, an information notice on the web for when re-ordering, highlighting the costs of prescriptions, better repeat previews, change the tick box on the ‘script, someone from the practice talk to the two local pharmacies, contact dom. care agencies to request that employees are more aware of this issue.
Dr McDowell explained country wide project ‘Quick Switchers’ which was identifying particular expensive drugs which are often over-prescribed and often wasted such as sip feeds, asking doctors to look for alternatives.
Dr McDowell also mentioned another project ‘Multiple Admissions to Hospitals’
6. Cinch/Healthwatch Update Celia reported that changes had occurred that meant Shropshire LINk were now operating as an entity, Cinch had other plans.
7. Shropshire Patients Group A & E Project is ongoing.
8. Southeast Shropshire Patients Group Eddie gave an update of information including the fact that this group would also have representation on S Shropshire Commissioning Group. Eddie would arrange a suitable meeting date for various medical practices in the southeast to discuss the formation of a Patients Group. Eddie and Chris would attend this meeting.
9. Practice Manager Update Diane and Mike had met and discussed the Telephone Project and had decided to create a virtual group of 300 people that could be used for surveys – this is an ongoing project and she has identified software that can be added to the Practice website to enable this survey. Mike reported that he was looking at improvements for how calls were managed. Diane also reported that the Surgery Pod is now active with results now being noted immediately onto patients’ records. She also said that suggestions for a new name for this machine would be considered.
